Written by Leigh Peck, illustrated by Virginia Lee Burton
On the heels of Mike Mulligan (1938) Burton illustrated Leigh Peck’s 1942 interpretations of the southwestern folktales of Coyote, a champion of the underdog and all around trickster. These are the original ink drawings and the color was added in the printing process. She hand painted photostats of the drawings to determine the colors she wanted. Her experiments with design in this book would set the stage for her Caldecott Medal winning The Little House that she created later that year.
