Nonny Hogrogian: Paintings

Much of Nonny’s non illustration work is based on largely two subjects; the teachings of Russian philospher G. I. Gurdjieff (c. 1877-1949) and the Armenian Genocide.

Gurdjieff expoused that most humans live in a state of hypnotic “waking sleep” and need to awaken to a higher state of consciousness to acheive their full potential. Part of this practice involved teaching “sacred dances” later known ast Gurdjieff Movements. Hence many of her works are of people dancing and contain his poems.

The Armenian Genocide (1915-1917) was the systematic destruction of the Armenian people by the Ottoman Empire during World War I. Nonny’s husband David Kherdian has written extensively on the events.
