“The artist in his studio is independent of the laws of gravity. We are presented the elements of an artist’s repertoire—landscape, cityscape, interiors, still life, flora and the figure. Yet we focus on the nude, who is not yet represented on the artist’s canvas. The composition is directed to the upper left corner of the painting and then into the distance. We start with the model, past the artist to the upper left corner and beyond, where we are left to our own thoughts. Passing through the artist’s world, we can now leave him to the business of making art.”
