Related to the Poet Laureate of the same year elsewhere in this exhibit, the Seated Fat Man’s thick, heavy body and crossed arms echoes the complacency and obstinacy that Baskin felt embodied the art world in the 1950’s. This bronze was included in an important 1959 exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York called New Images of Man. The exhibit profiled a new generation of figurative artists such as Alberto Giacometti, Rico Lebrun, Francis Bacon, Jean Dubuffet, and Willem de Kooning. A cast of this is in the MOMA’s permanent collection.
