Jeff Kern: Still Life
Table of Content
Table of Content is a series of still-life involving a limited group of objects interacting with various arrangements of vintage children’s blocks. The blocks interest me because of their basic form, the cube. Also, because they present letters on their faces. The letters of the alphabet inhabit common space in our consciousness and are a rich field of symbolism. I also enjoy the qualities of various other textures contrasted with the old wood and paint of the blocks; especially the reflective surfaces of brass and silver. My designs are built around the juxtaposition of the curvilinear metallic surfaces with the planes of the cubes. I consider the process of painting to be my meditation, through which the realization of the material substance in paint is both my goal and my reward. – Jeff Kern
