“The organic flow of the landscape around Hamlet frames the scene; elements on the flat plain are rendered here in sparkling broken color, as if ghosts of the past threaten to emerge at any moment. Hamlet contemplates Yorick’s skull to which he seems melded, blocked in boldly by roughly hewn strokes of color, as if he can neither be separated from the skull nor the impending moment of truth.”
