David Small‘s books have been translated into several languages, made into animated films and musicals, and have won many of the top awards accorded to illustration, including a 1997 Caldecott Honor and The Christopher Medal for The Gardener written by his wife, Sarah Stewart, the 2001 Caldecott Medal for So, You Want To Be President? by Judith St. George, and most recently a 2013 Caldecott Honor for One Cool Friend by Toni Buzzeo. Small was featured in the documentary Library of the Early Mind and his drawings have appeared regularly in The New Yorker and The New York Times. His recent graphic novel,Stitches, about his troubled childhood, was a #1 New York Times Bestseller and named one of the ten best books of 2009 by Publishers Weekly.
