The inspiration for this work was a Bernini sculpture Elephant Carrying Obelisk, a 17th century commission outside an ancient temple dedicated to Minerva the goddess of wisdom. It was one of several works from 1967 on a theme of continuity, another being Continuity which is also in this exhibit.
