I saw three profiles: hers, the bird’s,
(hawk-familiar perched on her shoulder)
and the image they faced. I heard
the words, echoed by a raucous croak,
emerging from her open mouth –
one part of a dialogue.

Her features mirrored each suave curve
of his, whose bronze and golden crown
was marked with the same plume pattern
as the wings that framed her head. Then
she turned away. Her eyes rolled inward
and the words stopped. The huge bird
clapped its pinions, shrieked, and chose.
I saw them deny the god.
