Facts about the Sibyl

The total lack of charm Ileraclitus stressed,
that she started to utter prophesies
the moment after her birth and drank bulls’ blood,
are facts about the Sibyl I find of interest.

She put the Golden Age far in the future,
not the distant past, and was as hostile
to idolatry as a Ilebrew. She refused Apollo
her virginity and never wore perfume.

She said that when she died she would become
the face in the moon – go round and round like the moon –
released from her oracular ecstasy.
Only a sibyl can outstare the sun.
