From the Vault: Caroline Young
Caroline Young was born in Hong Kong, China before moving to Hawaii for University. She began studying French until meeting art professor, Lam Oi Char who quickly became her mentor. Her work is based on visually interpreting ancient Chinese myth utilizing the materials of watercolor, acrylic and gouache on Japanese silk. Using the technique of “gongbi” (a traditional Chinese form of painting) the artwork is created through delicate and time-consuming washes of color are built up, resulting in precise details, and images that appear to be lit from within. “It takes 6 to 8 weeks to complete a 30 inch by 20 inch painting, working on one painting at a time, 8 to 10 hours a day, 6 days a week.” Notes Young on how time consuming the process is. Caroline Young’s work appears in several galleries throughout the United States, as well as in permanent collections such as at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, California and the Pacific Asian Museum in Pasadena, California.
