White Man Runs Him

I admit to being somewhat obsessed with White Man Runs Him, the Crow scout who worked for Custer. His name bespeaks his response in childhood to the aggressive presence of U.S. soldiers. I have drawn his face many times, seeing in him a person trapped in the cross-currents of history. Crow visionaries often spoke of the white man’s eventual taking over of the land & the buffalo & suggested survival in friendship. The Sioux & the Crow had long been enemies & White Man Runs Him said, “I knew Cheyennes and Sioux wanted to take the land by conquest, so I stayed with the soldiers to help hold it.”
