Spotted Tail

Spotted Tail, a great chief, joined Red Cloud in declaring, “Tell the people that this is not an Indian war but a white man’s war. A great many widows & orphans have been made on both sides. It is displeasing to the Great Spirit.” Spotted Tail understood the true value of the gold in the Black Hills. He said in 1875, “Our Great Father has a big safe & so have we. This hill is our safe. We want seventy million dollars for the Black Hills.” Crazy Horse said, “One does not sell the earth upon which the people walk.”
