Mast and Sails are part of the prologue of The Love for Three Oranges. The mast and sails are part of the backdrop while the cast of the Theatre Tiepolo and their audience mill about the stage before the play begins. A cannon shot rings out, which both of the parties on stage react to. The live audience see the mast and sails fall, as if a ship has been sunk from another ships cannon fire. It is only after this action that the play is able to begin.
