The Cunning Little Vixen is a Czech opera written by Leos Janacek in 1921-23. In 1981 the New York City Opera produced the opera featuring set and costumes designed by Maurice Sendak.
“Mr. Sendak, in his City Opera debut, has designed a captivating menagerie, sometimes tilting too far in the direction of Disneyland, but on the whole capturing and holding a dusky woodlands mood. The moonstruck tone of ”A Midsummer Night’s Dream” came to mind, especially in the enchanted opening scene.” –Donal Henahan, New York Times (1981)
