Fritz Wegner
Fritz Wegner (1924-2015) Wegner did many Christmas projects in his long career as a freelance illustrator including a series of Christmas postage stamps for the Royal Mail in 1969, limited edition Christmas plates for Fleetwood and Wyoming in the mid-1980’s, and several children’s books including A Christmas Carol and Don’t Look Now It’s Christmas.
Wegner was born in Vienna into a Jewish family. Following the Nazi annexation of Austria a funny drawing he did of Adolf Hitler angered a Nazi-sympathizing teacher and he was beaten. Fearing for his safety, his family sent the 13-year old to go to school in London and they later joined him. A scholarship to St Martin’s School of Art and an apprenticeship led him to a long career of illustration doing covers for books such as The Catcher in the Rye and The Long Goodbye and illustrating religious works by Dorothy L. Sayers. He a running series for Cricket from 1973 as well as several covers such as this one.
