Born in Wichita, Kansas on November 19, 1942, Max Standley is an artist to the core of his being. For 37 years his talent has allowed him to live and breathe art without outside income. He lives reclusively with his wife on a secluded 40 acres, deep in the Arkansas forests, that give him the freedom to immerse himself in his oil painting, engraving, poetry and drawing. The result is paintings that vibrate with his intensity. Engravings are created and hand pulled by the artist with a skill lost to our "instant art" society. His work is based on realism, with hints of biomorphic and visionary imagery, showing a depth that leaves no doubt regarding his talent and skill.

"My work is a part I play in nature's drama and is a form of self development,” says Standley. “Archetypical symbolism is an integral part of the process.” Standley feels that the symbols speak to others on a conscious and unconscious level, allowing them to connect to his vision of the world. Presently, Standley is working on a series of murals for the Bradley Museum in Jasper, Arkansas depicting Arkansas history. The first panel, The Trail of Tears, was completed recently.
