In 1969, Leonard Baskin painted 120 large scale drawings for his seminal rendition of Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy. These powerful works typify both the artist's and the writer's unflinching dedication to the universal qualities of the human condition. We are proud to present this groundbreaking collection in their first public exhibition in more than 35 years.

The following works were published in Thomas G. Bergin's translation. Grossman Publishers, New York, 1969.

And of their number I myself am one.
For such defect and for no other crime
We are forlorn and suffer only this:
That without hope we live on in desire.
Inferno IV, 39-42

Purgatorio

Two angels who were armed with fiery swords,
But blunted and with points both broken off.
Purgatory VIII, 26-27

Paradiso

So, high above a thousand lanterns shining,
I saw a Sun which lent to them Its light
As ours illuminates the stars above.
