Baskin considered this early major work to be the first manifestation of his mature style. One of the earliest extant wood sculptures, his iconography is clearly visible, upwardly raised hands and heavy garmenting. These characteristics would be echoed years later in one of Baskin’s most famous works: The Ann Arbor Holocaust Memorial.
