Saint Anthony of Padua
Cherry Wood
1970

Saint Anthony was known for his perseverance through temptation and was a favorite subject of renaissance painters, often portrayed amidst hordes of demons. This carving was a commission done for his client’s son Anthony. There are references to St. Anthony being the patron saint of swine herders. This sculpture was included in a 1974 exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Springfield called Leonard Baskin in Massachusetts.
