Dead Man
Bronze relief
1965

Baskin did his first series of dead figures between 1952 and 1956, a subject he returned to throughout his life and culminating in the monumental Unnoticed Dead of 1982. The works ranged from six inches long in his Hanged Man, to his monolithic 70” Great Stone Dead Man. He said,” I think of them as gisants, modern counterparts of the great ecclesiastical effigy figures placed on tombs in medieval European cathedrals.”
