Hanged Man
Bronze
1956
Part of a series of dead men Baskin did between 1952
and 1956; it follows the monumental woodcut of the
same name. Was this an abused victim or a punished
criminal? Was it a suicide? Is this justice or tragedy?
This juxtaposition along with the stark immediacy
of the subject’s death makes it one of Baskin’s
most powerful images.
