Vashti
Bronze
1995
The wife of King Ahashverosh, King of Persia, Queen
Vashti was commanded to appear before the King (and
his banquet) unclothed, wearing only the royal crown.
She refused and was executed for her defiance (Book
of Esther.) Baskin’s work often portrayed the
nobility of the marginalized in the face of oppression,
whether that be for reasons of gender, race, religion
or belief. The bronze followed a watercolor series
of Biblical women.
