Man of Peace
Woodcut
1952
A seminal work for Baskin, the first of his monumental
woodcuts, it was the image that gained him national
recognition. He said of them, “I should say
that the mastodon woodcuts are the capital achievement
of my printmaking activity.” They would influence
a generation of printmakers including Rauschenberg,
Frankenthaler, and Warhol. The image’s first
attempt, Peace, a year and a half previous was two
inches tall.
